The Canopy: A Welcoming Space at the Heart of East Marsh
In the middle of Grant Thorold Park on the East Marsh, something special is happening.
What started as a forest school has grown into a warm, welcoming hub for the whole community — a place where people of all ages can connect, recharge, and belong. At the heart of it all is Michelle Cook, a passionate educator, local leader, and founder of The Canopy Community Hub.
Meet Michelle
Michelle is a familiar face to many families in Grimsby. She runs three local preschools — two in Humberston and one in Grant Thorold Park — with a simple belief: every child, no matter where they’re born, deserves equal opportunities.
But during the COVID-19 pandemic, Michelle saw something else: parents and families on the East Marsh needed more than early years education — they needed support, connection, and a safe, inclusive space. So she took over the building next to the park and opened The Canopy.
“If your house is cold and you can’t afford the heating, come into The Canopy. We’re a warm space. You don’t have to buy anything — and we’ll likely give you something free to eat or drink.”

What is The Canopy?
The Canopy is a community hub rooted in compassion. Families visit to take part in activities like Lego Club, forest school, art groups, and gentle seated exercise classes. Children on the park pop in for free fruit and a drink. Older people join walking groups, Pilates or mindfulness sessions — or simply come for a chat, a game of Scrabble, and a slice of cake.
“It’s cosy. Friendly. Our staff know people by name. And that one cup of tea and chat might be the only conversation someone has all day.”
Michelle and her team work hard to create an environment where everyone feels welcome — from toddlers and teens to pensioners and parents. No judgment. No pressure. Just connection.
Activities with Heart
Here’s just a glimpse of what happens each week at The Canopy:
- Andy's Man Club: A mental health support group for men, with around 30–40 attending weekly.
- Home-Ed Forest School: Hands-on learning around nature, fire safety, the environment and art projects.
- Seated Exercise, Pilates & Walking Groups: Funded by Sport England and designed to reduce isolation while getting people moving.
- Free Children’s Breakfasts: Pancakes, cereal, porridge, fruit — available every morning, no questions asked.
- Creative Clubs: Pebble painting, mindful colouring, and art-based friendship circles for adults.
- Sunday Assembly: Inclusive, uplifting event with sing-along songs, inspiring and informative speakers, and cake!
This is grassroots community work in action — warm, human, and rooted in real relationships.
“We’re the canopy of the East Marsh. Everyone is welcome and belongs a place beneath our branches.”
Community Impact
What’s the biggest difference The Canopy is making?
“Togetherness. Connection. Safety. If you feel vulnerable, you can walk in. If you’re lonely, you’ll be welcomed.”
With a team of four staff at The Canopy, and over 24 across all three of the education sites, the hub isn’t just offering services — it’s also creating jobs for local people. Staff stay because they care. Many grew up here. They understand the community.
And the impact shows. From the 60+ children who met Santa for free at the Christmas fair (with presents funded by local donors), to the friendships formed through regular activities — The Canopy is quietly transforming lives.
Supported by Many
The Canopy has grown thanks to the generosity of funders and supporters, including:
- Children in Need – supporting children’s projects
- Sport England – funding health and wellbeing activities
- North East Lincolnshire Council – warm spaces grants
- Bridge McFarland Solicitors – fundraising through local events
- Cold Star Refrigeration – covering costs for children’s lunches
- Local Schools and Volunteers – helping with events and ongoing support
And they’ve just had exciting news — thanks to funding from Anthony Chapman (part of Our Future’s Home Wins team), a Junior Parkrun is coming to the park, helping more children stay active and connected every Sunday.
How You Can Support The Canopy
The Canopy is always looking for new supporters — not just for funding, but for time, partnership and energy.
👣 Sponsor a leaf on their large indoor tree by donating £120 as a local business
💡 Fund a session – even £500 can help cover food, gifts or group activities
🙋♂️ Volunteer at one of their events or regular sessions
💬Spread the word – tell others about the support available
💚 Use the space – bring your group, attend a session, or just pop in for a cuppa
The Canopy is more than just a building in a park. It’s a symbol of what’s possible when local people create solutions for their own community.
